Home / Service Areas / Muhlenberg
Muhlenberg Township sits just north of Reading, built up around communities like Temple, Hyde Park, Tuckerton, and Riverview. Much of its housing is post-war, with older homes mixed in.
Muhlenberg was established as a township in 1851, formed from the western part of Alsace Township. Its neighborhoods grew around older villages, Temple, Tuckerton, Rosedale, Hyde Park, and Riverview, and the Fifth Street Highway corridor became its main commercial road. The result is a mix: older homes near the original village centers and large areas of mid-20th-century housing, including ranches, Cape Cods, and split-levels on block foundations and slabs.
Mid-century homes here are often built on concrete block foundations. The hollow cores in block walls give subterranean termites a hidden path upward, so a colony can reach the sill plate without leaving a mud tube on the visible face of the wall. In these homes we pay close attention to the sill and rim joist along the full perimeter, not just near the spot where activity was reported. See sill and beam replacement for how damaged sections are replaced.
Split-levels and homes with attached garages have framing that meets concrete at or near grade: bottom plates of walls on the slab, the step between levels, and door framing between garage and house. That wood is close to soil and often damp, so it's a common target. Damage here can be harder to spot because it sits behind finished walls and trim. The signs of structural damage guide covers what to look for.
Not everything in Muhlenberg is post-war. Homes near the older village centers like Temple and Tuckerton can be considerably older, with stone or early block foundations, heavier sill timbers, and wood posts on basement floors. Those houses share more with Reading's older homes than with the township's subdivisions, and the repairs reflect that. Shoring and sill work on an older foundation takes more preparation than on a modern block wall.
Termite findings in Muhlenberg often come from a routine inspection or a home sale. Once your pest-control company has treated, we assess the framing on site for free, map what's damaged, and give you a written scope with a fixed price. Ask for the warranty terms in writing before any work starts. For a sense of what drives price, see the cost guide.
In block foundations, termites can travel inside the hollow cores and reach the sill without showing tubes on the wall face. The damage is real even when the visible signs are limited.
It has more framing near grade than a two-story on a full basement, so there are more places for termites to reach. That doesn't mean damage is likely, only that those areas deserve a closer look.
Yes. Laureldale is its own borough next to Muhlenberg, and we serve it the same way: assessment, written scope, fixed price, and repair after treatment.
